Agender

The Agender flag was designed by Salem in 2014. It includes the colors: black, gray, white and green. Black and white stand for the total absence of gender, grey stands for “semi-genderless” and green stands for non-binary gender (inverse of purple).

Agender is a term that can literally be translated as without gender. It can be seen either as a non-binary gender identity or as a statement about the absence of a gender identity. Persons who identify themselves as agents may describe themselves as one or more of the following persons:

  • Genderless or without gender.
  • Unisex. This can be meant in the sense that neither man nor woman nor have a gender.
  • Neutrois or neutral gender-specific.
  • Have an unknown or indefinable gender; do not match a binary or non-binary gender.
  • Have no other words that match their gender identity.
  • Not knowing or caring about gender as an internal identity and/or as an external label.
  • Decision not to label their gender.
  • Identify more than one person as any gender.

Many agendas also identify as gender-specific, non-binary, and/or transgender. However, some Agender individuals prefer to avoid these terms, especially transgender ones, as they believe that this means identifying as a gender other than the gender assigned to them, when in fact they do not identify as a gender at all. In fact, the term Agender is considered by many to be an oxymoron. Since it is a lack of gender, some believe that it should not be called gender at all. Others see the label Agender as an explanation that they are completely without gender.Agender people may prefer pronouns, although some prefer to use gender language as much as possible about themselves. They can also be present in some way – male, female, both or something completely beyond the binary. Agender people can (but don’t have to) suffer from gender dysphoria if they are unable to express their identity the way they want.Agender individuals may seek out many of the same hormone therapies or surgeries available to transgender and non-binary individuals.Agender people can be anyone’s sexuality and should not be confused with being asexual. The seven-striped Agender flag was created in 2014 by Salem, also known as Tumblr User Transrants. The alternative Agender flag with four stripes always has the black stripe at the top, not to be confused with the aromatic flag, which has more stripes, and the black stripe at the bottom.
